The Kashmir Files - Vivek Agnihotri

The Kashmir Files is a film based on true events that took place in 1990s. Lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits were forces to leave their homes. Their story remained untold till today.

This film doesn't have a single hero. Neither does he have any romance with a heroine. There are no songs after every 10 minutes. Moreover, no talk show has promoted this film. So, basically it is not a film , it's an emotion.

It is the truth that needs to reach to you and that truth is we want to live in a comfortable world forget about what has happened the past is meant to be forget and we believe in this saying but we fail to understand some wounds don't heal with time. The Kashmir files is a story of two days. Today, where people like you and me live and the second is that black day 19th Jan 1990.A day that Kashmiri Pandit still relive. That day where they were forced out of their own homes with a muzzle placed at their heads to get them to comply.
The Kashmir files is not a film as there is no Hero ,all the characters are villains. The government simply look the other way. It kept giving excuses. The media held the victims responsible for the atrocities. The police kept watching as crimes took place and all of us turned away from the truth for 30 years. The Kashmir files is reminder that the world is not innocent and we need to dig for the truth ourselves .We need to take responsibility for it ourselves. Some incidents in the film are so shocking that you wonder how someone can do this to their neighbor? But, the filmmaker provides proof of the real life incident. 'Truth is stranger than fiction' that is the role that art plays in society. Art brings truth in front of you regardless of how bitter the truth is to swallow. Let me explain, there is a famous film called Schindler 's list which is directed by Steven Spielberg which is about Jews and polish stuck in holocaust. This film won the Academy Award and became a greatest movies of all times because by using cinema as a medium the film maker keeps a part of history alive. It shares the pain of the Jewish. People to the current generation who is lucky to not experience it. I don't think this is a film because Kashmir Files is that cry for help which was pushed under the bed for 30 years by the media.
The atrocities were down played for 30 years which is coming up to the surface. This is not an film! It is an experience! When I saw the Kashmir files in the theater people not only stood up for the national anthem ,they Sung it together that voice came from their hearts.
If you will watch this movie you feel a sense of duty. Today, the truth is bringing people out of the comfort of their homes, making them spend rupees 500, bring them to the cinema hall needs tactics. Going to talk shows is one formula. Spreading news of an affair between the leads is a formula, spending money for running hashtag trends is a formula. But without fake hype only on the basis of the story bringing people to cinema halls is an achievement. A good movie is something that moves you and The Kashmir Files is successful in this matter.
The Kashmir files asks you a question that when we stop covering our past? Don't watch the Kashmir files if you can't stomach an uncomfortable and disturbing truth. Don't watch this movie if you can't see others suffering .But do watch the Kashmir file if you think that just like everyone else even they deserve to have their stories told.
